Paradise Moon

Bjørn Felle’s creative output is eclectic, engaging and energetic; an idiosyncratic electronic sound inspired by 80s synthpop and punk, 90s techno, house and indie grunge, the odd 16-bit video game soundtrack, and a healthy dose of psychedelia. 

Another example of his eclectic and exciting take on indie, electronica, and shoegaze, Paradise Moon’s five songs are distinct thematically and sonically from  Extreme Hazard Planet, even though both were inspired by the same creative sources. The album and EP were conceived together in terms of writing and recording, and Bjørn always intended them to be seen as separate, though related, releases. Bjørn views Paradise Moon as a natural and somehow inevitable companion piece for Extreme Hazard Planet:

“Paradise Moon has a softer synthwave vibe compared to Extreme Hazard Planet. In contrast to the album’s themes of anger and incredulity, Paradise Moon aims to communicate feelings of sadness, disappointment and fear, and a desire to escape from humanity. The album is more industrial, influenced by 80s electro industrial goth bands like Skinny Puppy and Killing Joke, as well as some esoteric stuff like Admonition and Theory of Mind, which are kinda like Röyksopp on a bad trip. I wanted to flip this on the EP, inverting the concept in every way I could. They're separate records, but like the Earth and the moon they are part of the same thing, one made from the other and trapped in an orbit it can't escape from.”

Extreme Hazard Planet

Bjørn Felle’s creative output is eclectic, engaging and energetic; an idiosyncratic electronic sound inspired by 80s synthpop and punk, 90s techno, house and indie grunge, the odd 16-bit video game soundtrack, and a healthy dose of psychedelia. As a result, Extreme Hazard Planet sounds like a blend of the tongue-in-cheek party vibes of Holy Fuck and the character-piece songwriting of Blur, amped and industrialised and then degraded with the lo-fi VHS vibes of TVAM.

Exploring the album’s genesis, themes and inspiration, Bjørn explains:

“Extreme Hazard Planet is the neon alert blinking on your head-up display. It's the warning blaring in your helmet. It's the history of a civilisation encoded in a probe and launched into the unknown, in hopes that another planet might learn not to be doomed to repeat that history.

“Closer to home, it's my way of trying to understand the growing tendency within humans for self-destruction. It's a story told in roughly chronological order, starting with instincts like tribalism, the pleasure principle and empathy. The album takes a brutalising joyride through the wasteland, touching on our apathy towards the whole thing along the way.

Following on from Dopamine, his well-received official AnalogueTrash debut, Bjørn Felle gets up close and personal on the lyrically and sonically deep Theory of Mind.

Says Bjørn, “Theory of Mind is a portrayal of this broken form of empathy, which can be used to get inside another person's head, but not to truly care about them. Lyrically I approached this as a moment of change, where the emotional mode of connection is deprecated in favour of a purely cognitive function.”

“What follows is a brute force attack, like using what you know about someone to guess their passwords. There's this notion of freedom, like the part of the programming that makes you feel shame is just redundant now, since you don't have to experience what the other person feels.”

Bjørn approached the arrangement and sound of Theory of Mind with these concepts in mind. “Sonically I was aiming overall for a hollow, cavernous feel. I filled the cave with layers of arpeggiated synths and skippy percussion in an inconsistent rhythmic structure, all repeating in loops, like the iterative process of breaking down another person's psyche from the outside in.”
