The fifth part of the international compilation from Label Cantroll's “Downtown” series. A month-long selection round was held, musicians sent their submissions, and in the end 16 tracks from 18 authors from the USA, France, Russia, Finland, Serbia, Belarus and Ireland were chosen. These are benevolent electronic music in the genres of downbeat, hip-hop, soul and chill-hop.

A man in self exile is confronted with unpaid debts to the world at large. Not feeling up to the task of pretending to care, he sets out to establish a mood that's akin to saying "I'm sorry, Why should I know your name again?"

In a fortress of self serving thought, our narrator Ickey shuffles his way through the load of bs that's soon to be scooped out to the eager arms of whomever is unfortunate enough to love those who draw his ire.

Pa Dušy (translated from Belarusian as “By the Soul”) is a joint lo-fi hip-hop album from Plushka and kbkbts. Warm, soft and cozy. Mysterious, like a good fairy tale at a summer night fire, under baked potatoes - that's how you can describe this release.

From the authors: “For us it's not just a joint work, it's a search for that very sound, which would most accurately convey a part of the inner world of each of us and views on life. Try to listen to this music not with your mind, but with your heart”

Secret markings on a back alley wall, an inconspicuous door, a secret knocking at 90 beats per minute, ritual handshakes... Welcome to the Secret Society of Beatmakers.

This is where old school is mixed with modern synthesizers and drum machines. Live double bass and flutes, samplers (roland sp 404, elektron digitakt) and synthesizers (arturia micrifreak, dreadbox typhon) - all this formed the basis of Surmachina's already signature sound.

The new album is about the power of rhythm, about life in the big city, about peace of mind and the Way...
 
Surmachina is a beatmaker's project from the north of Moscow, which absorbed the ideas of classic hip-hop, noir-jazz, and lo-fi aesthetics. In each of his releases, he experiments with a new sound. For example, the album “Japanese Notes”, is recorded in the format of travel notes: with warm guitars, dictaphone recordings and jazz melodies. And the album “Strange Rhythms of Evening Moscow Region” is united by reflection on the theme of megapolis and its suburbs. Sometimes, in Surmachina tracks you can hear a hoarse saxophone and enchanting female vocals. 
Last year's release “Onega” mixed hip-hop beats, electronics and authentic instruments. In particular: recordings of Solovetsky choir, Bulgarian and Pomor chants, sampled Scandinavian talharpa (bowed instrument) and Carpathian kalyuka (flute).
