phiz is Tristen + Cortney Tidwell

In a city teeming with overly polished productions and carefully curated collaborations, Phiz emerged from something far more precious: genuine friendship and spontaneous creation. Nashville artists Cortney Tidwell and Tristen Gaspadarek have been in each other’s orbits for years, often spending time surrounded by family, friends and music. They found musical chemistry during informal jam sessions where the only rule was to keep it simple — "Two chords!" became their rallying cry as they traded instruments and explored sonic spaces.

The project, which Tristen dubbed "attic jams and friendship", captures the rare magic of two accomplished musicians creating purely for creation's sake. Their improvisational sessions yielded a treasure trove of material, much of it preserved in unfinished bootleg recordings and voice memos. These two tracks, unearthed from an ancient harddrive, maintain the raw energy of their origin — snapshots of artistic spontaneity. They are simple but they are filled with real pathos, talent and fundamental joy of being together.

While Phiz remains a moment in time rather than an ongoing project, these recordings stand as testament to the power of unplanned creativity and the musical possibilities that emerge when friendship leads the way.

Mr Peel 

The album "High" is nine thoughtful and melancholic songs with female and male vocals in English from the French project Mr Peel. The release is influenced by the books of Charles Baudelaire, the founder of decadence and symbolism. Musically it is rock, stretching from a lighter acoustic form, to psychedelic as in the 70s. The main instruments are guitars, but vintage instruments are also used for authenticity: Farfisa Organ Duo synthesiser, Fender Rhodes MKI electric piano, Wem Watkins Copicat and Roland RE201 effects pedals, as well as EMS Synthi VCS3 emulator from Arturia. The album is released on Label Cantroll.

Following positive feedback and suggestions at The Demo Drop that is "theatrical" arrangement does indeed have legs, and the quip that it made a friend feel like " a Techno Prisoner" (imagine that in the most Welsh of accents) here we are.

This is a 'Minimum Viable Production' - 4 to the floor, a bass line, a string like chord progression, and the Amen break.

In this album I tried to mix all of my influences in electronic music, artists like Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Brian Eno, Apex Twin, Klaus Schulze, Shpongle, Carbon Based Lifeforms, Björk, Praga Khan, Aes Dana, and more, with subgeneres such as new age, progressive electronic, trance, progressive trance, techno, melodic techno, cinematohraphic music, psytrance, psybient, psychill, chillgressive, space ambient.

So in the end I reached an hybrid sound in the album, presenting both vintage-analogue sounds with modern-digital instruments and rhythms. The music here is emotional, there is often times of progressive tension and relief in the composition and melodies, other times the atmosphere is the main focus, things that I love in music.

This was the debut album of Cas du Pree and was produced by Arron Storey and Frans Rinsma. Kelly won the OGIMA award for song of the year 2023
