Secret markings on a back alley wall, an inconspicuous door, a secret knocking at 90 beats per minute, ritual handshakes... Welcome to the Secret Society of Beatmakers.

This is where old school is mixed with modern synthesizers and drum machines. Live double bass and flutes, samplers (roland sp 404, elektron digitakt) and synthesizers (arturia micrifreak, dreadbox typhon) - all this formed the basis of Surmachina's already signature sound.

The new album is about the power of rhythm, about life in the big city, about peace of mind and the Way...
 
Surmachina is a beatmaker's project from the north of Moscow, which absorbed the ideas of classic hip-hop, noir-jazz, and lo-fi aesthetics. In each of his releases, he experiments with a new sound. For example, the album “Japanese Notes”, is recorded in the format of travel notes: with warm guitars, dictaphone recordings and jazz melodies. And the album “Strange Rhythms of Evening Moscow Region” is united by reflection on the theme of megapolis and its suburbs. Sometimes, in Surmachina tracks you can hear a hoarse saxophone and enchanting female vocals. 
Last year's release “Onega” mixed hip-hop beats, electronics and authentic instruments. In particular: recordings of Solovetsky choir, Bulgarian and Pomor chants, sampled Scandinavian talharpa (bowed instrument) and Carpathian kalyuka (flute).

Zaranka's new chillout album is inspired by 70's soul tunes, intertwining solo parts on a virtual emulator of a vintage Wurlitzer piano and fairytale motifs of traditional Far Eastern instruments (koto, guzheng). Positive vibes fill the music and all this, together with leisurely beats and deep bass lines, creates a special atmosphere.

The artwork was done by Paradeigma. The release is an anniversary release, released in Label Cantroll's catalog at number 200.

He has previously released music on the Lemongrassmusic, and IONO Lounge labels. "Zaranka" means "early morning" in the dialect of the kuban cossacks.

Plunging into total darkness, into the void, a person separates from those parts of his life that no longer serve him, rethinks his beliefs, views, habits and attitudes towards all things. One gets rid of one's old and false self, revises one's moral values, gains an understanding and sense of ethereal connections, recognizes one's true being and transforms into one's "true self". But no matter how long, hard and dark this period is, there is always light at the end of the tunnel and this light is the true awakening, rebirth from a caterpillar into a butterfly. Everything has its sunset and only the night ends with the dawn."

The Eighth


The second release with a "samurai" title from The Eighth. The 27-track album "Samurai File" is essentially a compilation consisting of two previously released EPs, unreleased demos, and a reissue of the Time-Travelling Samurai album.

Musically, it's #abstract_hiphop  and acid jazz steeped in #lofi and broadway aesthetics. Recorded in an Ardour 5 DAW running in a Debian Linux environment.The album uses digital-analog sound processing with a Roland SP-404SX sampler and an Elektron Analog Heat effects processor. Digital remasters are done in REAPER.

"I originally had the idea of writing a short story with a retro-futuristic theme, featuring a time-traveling samurai and a detective from the future trying to catch him. In a kind of philosophical sense, I'm like a 'time-traveling samurai' myself - I worked on these tracks for several years, dropping them many times, then coming back to them again and almost ruining the whole project in an extremely long production process" - The Eighth.
