Back Where We Started

Back Where We Started represents a step forward and also a look to the recent past for Gene, since the track has ultimately been several years in the making. She says: “Some tracks are written and recorded in days, and then there are some that take years—this latest offering is one of those tracks.

“Lloyd and I wrote Back Where We Started in 2022 and recorded the vocals at Ford Lane Studio with Porl Young, who is a dream vocal producer. The orphic hymn used in the song was read and recorded by a lovely Greek friend of mine, giving it a real otherworldly and much more human sound. It’s a prayer essentially—highlighting that point when you step off your path and end up back at that exact point when it’s time to move forward again."

“2022 became very busy for everyone, with 2023 also seeing a lot of changes in all our lives. I asked Porl for the parts to finish the track over here in Berlin, which he kindly provided. I was lucky enough to work with Sebastian Lee Philip (Die Wild Jagd/Noblesse Oblige) to finish off and mix the track, which was great! Having known him so long, it was so easy to work with him. There's been so much talent involved in this track—from its creation right down to the mastering process at Analogue Cut here in Berlin—that was another wonderful experience. The engineer’s use of analogue equipment gave the finished release a very special sound, I think.”

The song’s title is especially apt for Gene, who had to take a break from being active in music due to some personal circumstances. She continues:

“I knew I needed to do things differently moving forward.  In October 2024 I really felt I was ready; I had the best remixes coming and new music in the pipeline, I was able to continue the creative journey, and I finally knew where I was at and how and where I wanted to work."

Starstruck Love

The Frixion are British born, Berlin based singer songwriter Gene Serene – a prolific writer and performer whose unique vocal style has been featured in genres as diverse as pop, dance and electroclash – while Essex based producer and keyboardist Lloyd Price brings his many years of production experience and expertise to the mix.

Joining the band more recently is London based DJ and producer Porl Young, well known for his DJ residency at the iconic Heaven nightclub and his work with Rosetta Stone, Nina Hagen, Wayne G, Sleazesisters and more.

The Frixion’s intoxicating blend of sultry vocals, conscious lyrics and beautifully elegant arrangements has seen them win over not just fans of electronic music, but also discerning fans of well written, intelligent pop as well. Starstruck Love is no exception.

Starstruck Love is a reflection on love that never fades, even when faced with the challenges brought by time and distance. Gene says, “It’s about the nature of love - one can pretend it doesn’t exist, walk away from it, even try to deny it forever – however pure love never wanes and the moment you’re confronted with that person again, it’s there - the emotion just as it always was like time travel.”

Expanding on the genesis of the track, she continues “It’s taken a really, really long time to finish writing and recording this song. I recorded it several times in different places, and I sometimes still wonder if it’s actually finished. But I am very excited to get this track out there to the world – finally."

As well as the original version and a radio edit of the song, Starstruck Love boasts a suite of melodic house remixes and dub versions from Berlin based DJ Aaron Hedges – an experienced DJ and producer, well known for his sets at the legendary Bar 25 club in Berlin and his collaborations with vocalist Aérea Negrot.
